Kuldhara – The Abandoned Village with a Thousand Stories

Just 18 km from Jaisalmer lies one of Rajasthan’s most mysterious and intriguing sites — Kuldhara, the abandoned village that continues to captivate visitors with its eerie silence and haunting beauty. Once a prosperous settlement of Paliwal Brahmins, Kuldhara was suddenly deserted overnight around 200 years ago — and to this day, no one knows the full truth behind why.

Legend has it that the village was abandoned in the 19th century due to oppression by a powerful minister, who wanted to marry a local girl against her will. To protect their honor, the villagers fled overnight — not just from Kuldhara, but from 83 nearby villages as well — and left behind a chilling curse that no one could ever settle there again. Since then, the village has remained deserted, its stone homes, narrow lanes, and crumbling temples frozen in time.
